Sony has scrapped its plans for its Silver & Black Spider-Man spin-off team-up film, and will replace it with separate films for Black Cat and Silver Sable, according to Variety.
A Black Cat film will be the first of the pair to go into production.
“We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film,” said Sanford Panitch, head of Sony's Columbia Pictures. “We’re focused on being faithful to the comics.”
Director Gina Prince-Blythewood is reportedly unlikely to remain on board to direct either the Black Cat or Silver Sable films, though the Hollywood trade reports that she will serve as a producer for both films. Should Prince-Blythewood's departure be finalized, Variety says the studio is committed to hiring another female director for the projects.
Variety also reports that along with previously announced films in development for Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Silk, and Nightwatch, a film based on Jackpot may be in the works.
No projected release dates for any of Sony's in-development Spider-Man spin-off films have been announced.
