Robert De Niro is in negotations for a role as a talk show host in Warner Bros.'s 2019 Joker film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film, which is already set to star Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, will reportedly be set in 1980s New York City. THR describes De Niro's potential role as "somehow instrumental in the Joker's origin."

DC Comics' most famous talk show host may be Jack Ryder (a.k.a. the Creeper), but a talk show host could also factor into the Joker's origin as a failed stand-up comedian - something introduced in into his comic book origin in Batman: The Killing Joke.

This Joker film is being produced by De Niro's frequent film partner, Martin Scorcese.

The Hangover's Todd Phillips is scheduled to begin filming Joker this September, based on a script by himself and Scott Silver.

Joker is scheduled to open in theaters October 4, 2019.
