Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in development for a reboot once again as a live-action television series, according to Deadline. The project is set up at Fox 21 TV Studios, with series creator Joss Whedon working with Midnight, Texas creator Monica Owusu-Breen. The two worked together previously on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Owusu-Breen is set to write/showrun the new series if it gets off the ground.
"[The new Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be] like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today," read a statement provided to Deadline by the producers.
Deadline cites sources say that show's empahsis on diversity reflects the producers intention to cast an African American actor to be the new slayer.
The show is also described as contemporary, "building on the mythology of the original."
This new Buffy show is being pitched to unspecified streaming and cable networks this summer.
