Goosebumps creator R.L Stine has signed a deal to write a series of four "supernatural middle grade" graphic novels for BOOM! Studios' KaBoom! imprint. The name of the series and the artists involved were not announced, but BOOM! expects the first book to be released in fall 2019.
“I'm so lucky to have been able to scare so many generations of kids,” said R.L. Stine. “Now I feel lucky to be going just beyond Goosebumps to a whole new medium of fright and chilling laughs. I'm hoping that BOOM! is the sound of an explosion of fun in a whole new world for me."
BOOM!'s Vice President of Editorial & Creative Strategy Bryce Carlson brokered the deal directly with Stine.
“As a lifelong fan of R.L. Stine, I couldn’t be more excited to see him scare a whole new generation with a series of original horror graphic novels at BOOM! Studios,” said Carlson. “His work changed my life as a reader and I can’t wait for today’s young readers to share that experience as R.L. Stine takes the graphic novel format and sends everyone just beyond the limits of their imaginations…”
R.L. Stine's Goosebumps has been licensed for various comic books over the decades, and in 2017 he made his comics-writing debut on Marvel's Man-Thing.
"And I’ve always been a comic book fan, especially when I was a kid. I don’t read a lot now, not really, but I was a comic book freak when I was a kid. So this is really full circle for me. When I was in fourth grade, about nine years old, I started doing these little comic books, drawing the characters and passing them around in school," Stine told Newsarama in 2017. "Everyone told me 'You can’t draw at all! This sucks!' and they were right, I couldn’t draw at all. But that’s really what I started out wanting to do, but I had no talent at all so I knew I had to be a writer. So this is kind of coming full circle for me."
