HBO has placed a pilot order for a prequel series based on George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The still untitled series will be created by Martin and producer Jane Goldman, known for producing the comic book films Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service. Goldman will serve as showrunner and will write the show's pilot. Current Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are not involved with the prequel series.
“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour." reads HBO's logline for the pilot, which will delve into the mysteries of Westeros' fabled past. "And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.”
The series is the first of several Game of Thrones prequel concepts simultaneously generated by various writers for HBO starting in 2017.
No premiere date for the untitled series has been announced.
