Writer Brian Michael Bendis ends his Invincible Iron Man run (and his time at Marvel) with a bang in this week's Invincible Iron Man #600, which brings in nine artists to tie-off the major plotlines of his run - and to leave some surprises for incoming writer Dan Slott.
Spoilers ahead for Invincible Iron Man #600.
Invincible Iron Man #600 kicks off with Tony Stark using the full power of his super-intellect to resurrect his dead best friend James "Rhodey" Rhodes (more on that right here). With his close ally now back in action, Tony sets out to return to his life after months comatosea and in hiding - setting out to clean up the messes that started in his absence.
First, over in England, Tony's birth mom Angela Armstrong, a former rock star and secret S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, confronts his long-thought-dead birth father Jude, who was secretly a Hydra agent. Tony's father wants to capture his son, planning to lure him to his mother's house with a phone call from her.
Tony is too busy dealing with another problem to respond, however, as he and Rhodey arrive on a cargo ship where the Hood and his gang are locked in a fight with Doom and his Doombots as they attempt to steal a controlling interest in Stark Enterprises. With the arrival of Iron Man, War Machine, and Tony's automated armors, the Hood morphs into demon form and begins a magical conflict with Doom. Though Doom manages to defeat the Hood, allowing Tony to save his company, he uses dark magic that allows the Hood (in demon form) to burn his face with magic - once again leaving him scarred and injured. Doom returns home and shatters his castle with magic, leaving it a heap of crumbling wreckage.
Meanwhile, Riri Williams and Dr. Toni Ho meet with a surprisingly-alive Leonardo da Vinci in his former S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, where he invites them to a new type of peacekeeping force he's building to replace S.H.I.E.L.D. Other recruits seen include Blade, Miles Morales, Cloud 9 and Trauma from Avengers: The Initiative, and even a guy with a striking resemblance to Cable.
As Tony's mom confronts his father, Mary Jane arrives, shooting Tony's father in the arm and leading him to call back-up from Hydra. MJ has back-up of her own though - Riri, Miles, and the rest of Leonardo da Vinci's team. Tony and Rhodey arrive to wrap things up, capturing his father and his Hydra cell, and re-establishing himself as Iron Man.
An epilogue set in the future offers one final, cryptic tease about what's to come for Tony. A young woman with magical abilities arrives at the Sanctum Sanctorum seeking magical aid - but she's turned away by none other than Kurt Wagner. When she uses her magic to get past Nightcrawler, she meets the Sorcerer Supreme - Tony Stark.
Iron Man's adventures will continue in Tony Stark: Iron Man #1 from writer Dan Slott and artist Valerio Schiti, on shelves June 20.
