In celebration CCA’s MFA in Comics graduate students making their return to San Francisco, California College of the Arts will host its sixth annual summer guest speaker series featuring three of comics' most celebrated creators and a special reading by our graduating students.

Each Friday during the month of July, the Comics in the City speaker series will highlight various aspects of the comics medium from independent publishing to the craft of writing and the future of digital comics. Featuring award-winning storyteller J.H. Williams III (Promethia, Sandman: Overture), critically-acclaimed cartoonist Julia Wertz (Tenements, Towers, & Trash), rising star Ashley A. Woods (Niobe, Ladycastle), and our very own graduate cartoonists, this public lecture series will take place on CCA's San Francisco campus in Timken Lecture Hall. J.H. Williams, Friday July 13th, 7pm, Timken Hall, 1111 8th Street

J.H. Williams III is an multiple award winning creator in illustration, design, and writing. J.H. is best known for his intricate visual storytelling while working on Promethea with Alan Moore, Desolation Jones with Warren Ellis, Batman with Grant Morrison, and recently, Sandman: Overture with Neil Gaiman. He is now working on projects outside of the comics industry including limited edition suit design for Artful Gentlemen out of San Francisco, all of packaging and cover art for rock band The Sword on their Apocryphon album, and album cover art for the legendary music icon, Blondie. J.H. lives is Central California with his adoring wife, a houseful of cats, and an ever expanding comic book collection.

Julia Wertz, Friday July 20th, 7pm, Timken Hall, 1111 8th Street

Julia Wertz is a professional cartoonist, amateur historian and part time urban explorer/photographer. She made the comic books The Fart Party Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (collected in Museum of Mistakes) and the graphic novels Drinking at the Movies, and The Infinite Wait and Other Stories, both of which were nominated for Eisner Awards. Her newest book, Tenements, Towers & Trash: An Unconventional, Illustrated History of New York City, was published by Black Dog & Leventhal/Hachette in Oct 2017, for which she won the 2018 Brendan Gill Prize. She currently does monthly comics and illustration for the New Yorker. Her work appears semi-regularly in publications such as the New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, the Believer, and Medium. She is a repeated MacDowell Colony fellow. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, she spent a decade in New York City. As of 2018, she lives in Northern California but is often in NYC.

Ashley A. Woods, Friday July 21st, 7pm, Timken Hall, 1111 8th Street

Born and raised in Chicago, Ashley A. Woods is an illustrator who got her start through self-publishing her action-fantasy comic series, Millennia War, while attending the International Academy of Design and Technology. After earning her degree in Video and Animation, she traveled to Kyoto, Japan where she presented her work in the gallery showcase Out Of Sequence. After returning to the states, her work from her comics were included in the Black Comix anthology which has been used in college courses at various universities internationally. When Ashley isn’t working, she enjoys playing video games and studying Japanese. Her works include Niobe: She is LIfe, Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade, and Ladycastle.
