Updated February 4, 2019: Thanks to its recent debut in China's theaters, 20th Century Fox's Deadpool 2 is now the biggest X-Men film ever at the global box office with $784 million, according to Deadline. Since opening January 24, 2019 in China, the sequel has earned $40.6m there - bringing the international gross to $462.2m, to go with the $285.8m North American take.

Deadpool 2 has surpassed the original Deadpool ($783.1m), and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($747.9m). As a whole, Deadpool 2 is currently the 19th-largest superhero film at the worldwide box office, behind 2002's Spider-Man ($821.7m).

Updated June 25: 20th Century Fox's Deadpool 2 has now become the third-largest R-rated film of all time with a $705 million global box office, according to Deadline. The Ryan Reynolds-starrer is trailing behind the original Deadpool ($783.1m) and The Matrix Reloaded ($742.1m), and has now passed It ($700.4m).

Breaking it down, Deadpool 2 has so far earned $304.1m domestically and $400.9m internationally.

Original Story: 20th Century Fox's Deadpool 2 earned $18.6 million at the domestic box office Thursday evening - breaking the record for R-rated films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That surpasses the previous record-holder, 2017's It ($13.5m), which took over the record from - you guessed it - 2016's Deadpool with $12.6m. The original Deadpool went on to make $132.4m in its 2016 domestic opening weekend.

Deadpool 2's $18.6m was also the biggest Thursday preview of any Marvel Comics movie not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Deadpool 2 played in 3,785 North American theaters on Thursday, with plans to expand to 4,349 on Friday.
