Updated April 30, 2018 at 4:28 p.m. EST: It's official - with $257,698,183, Avengers: Infinity War is now the highest-grossing fim ever domestically, beating the previous record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247,966,675), according to Box Office Mojo.
Original Story: Avengers: Infinity War has taken in an estimated $258.2 million in its opening box office weekend in North America according to Entertainment Weekly, making it the highest grossing domestic opening weekend for a film - sort of.
Those numbers come with a minor caveat - as EW says, they're an estimate, meaning official totals have not yet been disclosed. However, it is almost a certainty that the tallied receipts will surpass the previous record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens domestic opening weekend total of $247,966,675, with even the lowest estimates placing Avengers: Infinity War above a $250m opening.
Likewise, Avengers: Infinity War took in an estimated international opening weekend figure of $382.7m, making its estimated global tally $640.9m - almost $100m more than the previous record holder, The Fate of the Furious, which took in $541.9m globally in its first weekend.
Avengers: Infinity War is open now in most major countries, with Russia and China joining in on May 3 and May 11, respectively.
