Domestic 3D movie ticket sales are seeing a significant decline, according to Variety. The Hollywood trade reports that 3D ticket sales dropped 18% between 2016 and 2017, with 2017's 3D ticket sales contributing only $1.3 billion to overall domestic box office receipts.

2010 marked a high point for the format, with 3D movie tickets taking in $2.2 billion domestically that year, driven by the overwhelming success of James Cameron's Avatar, a film with a series of planned sequels slated to be released starting in 2020.

Domestic box office numbers dropped across the board in 2017, down 2% from the previous year for an overall domestic box office total of $11.1 billion. Additionally, the number of 3D movies released in 2017 decreased as well. 44 3D films were released in 2017 versus 52 in 2016.
