INFINITE POSSIBILITIES1 of 9
We are mere weeks away from the release of what is shaping up to be the biggest Marvel Studios undertaking to date: Avengers: Infinity War.
This cacophonous culmination of caped crusaders is the conclusion to a decade of shared universe cinematic storytelling unlike anything the world has ever known.
But as we get closer to this colossal cosmic clobberin’ fest, for every question answered, another is raised. Here are some things that we noticed in the latest trailer.
ANT-MAN? HAWKEYE? WHERE ART THOU?2 of 9
We’ve seen both characters in Vanity Fair. We’ve seen set photos of Paul Rudd and the Russo brothers have confirmed that Hawkeye is on his own journey in Avengers: Infinity War. But both heroes seem to be missing from the latest trailer and movie poster (of course, Ant-Man could be there just, ya know, tiny) – and from the cast lists that appear on both the top and bottom of the poster which include even actors with presumably minor roles such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Benicio Del Toro, and Idris Elba.
Given that the Russos have already spoken about Ant-Man and The Wasp as a direct corollary to the events in Infinity War, Paul Rudd’s absence may just be saving audiences from some spoilers. But Hawkeye’s absence is notable. Has his journey ended up mostly on the cutting room floor? Or is there a reason that he’s being kept a Secret? Maybe Hawkeye’s journey leads to a certain Invasion that could inform Avengers 4.
HULKBUSTER-BUSTER?3 of 9
What's going on with the Hulk? Promotional materials from Fandango place Banner with Iron Man and his crew - but the Hulk is seen in Wakanda. Upcoming Lego sets confirm that Banner is the one inside the Hulkbuster armor, but from the trailer, it seems like Iron Man and his team never join the fight in Wakanda.
Thor: Ragnarok toyed with the idea of Hulk/Banner getting stuck in one incarnation and emphasized Banner's loyalty to his friends. We're going to take a leap of faith that it's that loyalty that gets Banner in the Hulkbuster armor.
So where does the Hulk come in? Go to the 1:41 mark of the trailer. Even if he wasn't expecting it, we think this is where the Hulk makes his return, busting out of the Hulkbuster armor in a fan-go-crazy moment.
THE UNIVERSE WILL NOW BE SET RIGHT4 of 9
Thanos’ comic book legacy is defined by that golden glove we all know and love known as the Infinity Gauntlet.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s heroes have seen many departures from their comic book counterparts, it’s clear that Avengers: Infinity War will be drawing heavily from all of the “Infinity” stories we’ve seen over the years. The presence of Thanos’ Black Order is an obvious connection to the film’s comic book roots, but astute viewers will note other similarities as well. We ran down the biggest ones right here.
HE LIKES TO COLLECT5 of 9
Benicio Del Toro’s name appears on the poster for Avengers: Infinity War, confirming that we’ll see the conniving Collector in this film. But will he play a bigger role than just giving up the Aether/Power Stone to Thanos?
From previously leaked footage, we know that a couple of Guardians get involved in that exchange. But barring Taneleer Tivan’s death at the hands of Thanos, could the Avengers gain an ally in one of the Elders of the Universe? Or could he herald the appearance of another threat to the universe?
Following Thanos’ defeat in the comics, the Collector foretold the coming of Korvac, a cyborg from the 31st century who is used by the Grandmaster to fight Doctor Strange and the Defenders and later imbued with the Power Cosmic. Infinity War may mark the end of many Marvel Cinematic Universe stories but it has the potential to be the beginning for countless more.
THAT LITTLE GREEN GIRL6 of 9
As the character with the closest connection to Thanos, Gamora serves as narrator of the latest Infinity War trailer, giving the other heroes and the audience the context they need to understand the threat the Mad Titan poses.
But it looks as though Gamora play will play a direct role in Thanos’ origins as well, seemingly appearing as a little girl walking with Thanos at an event that looks like a coronation.
Considering the conflict laid out in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies between Nebula and Gamora – not to mention their surrogate father – it seems Nebula or even perhaps Gamora herself may play a direct role in Thanos’ downfall, as in comic books.
WHO IS PETER DINKLAGE PLAYING?7 of 9
The latest Avengers: Infinity War poster has confirmed the appearance of Peter Dinklage in the film, but speculation continues to run high as to who the Game of Thrones actor will be playing. With Kevin Feige teasing to Vulture that there would be “interesting people doing the voices” for Thanos’ Black Order, the odds would be that Dinklage would be voicing one of those characters, seen in the trailer surrounding a captive Loki.
Irish actor Tom Vaughan Lawlor is rumored to be playing the Black Maw — seemingly confirmed on the Late Late Show, with a set photo of Lawlor in a motion-capture suit, straddling Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange — Dinklage is left voicing either the hulking Cull Obsidian (played in motion capture by Terry Notary) or the lethal Corvus Glaive.
And that’s assuming he’s playing a character we already know about…
TO INFINITY... AND BEYOND8 of 9
Iron Man has certainly graduated from his Silver Age roller skate boots with this latest trailer, as he blasts off into space thanks to his new rocket booster tech, seemingly teased by Hasbro’s latest Avengers: Infinity War toys.
Eagle-eyed viewers will note that it seems that Tony is in hot pursuit of the same ship that Spider-Man was clinging to in the previous Infinity War trailer — and given how this trailer places Iron Man and Spider-Man on a hellish-looking planet alongside Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy, it stands to reason that Tony and his young protege will be stranded in space together, leading them to team up with Marvel’s most lovable group of a-holes.
