The Joker will be a failed 80s comedian in director Todd Phillips' solo film, according to The Wrap.

The film is produced by Martin Scorsese, whose film The King of Comedy in which Robert DeNiro plays a struggling comedian is reportedly a major influence on the film.

The Wrap also reports actor Joaquin Phoenix, who was previously rumored to be in talks to play the lead role, is "close" to finalizing a deal.

No projected release date for the untitled Joker film has been announced.
