Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns March 2 for the second half of its fifth season - and given ABC has yet to decide about renewing the show, the season finale is being written as their series finale. Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurisa Tanchareon told TV Line that they are writing the episode this week, with it positioned to serve as "either" a season or a series ender.
"Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end," said Whedon. "We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.”
“We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted,” Whedon continued. “But we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. averages 2.3m viewers per episode - the lowest of all ABC dramas, comparable with Once Upon A Time - which was recently announced as ending.
It could be a while before renewal/cancellation announcement is public - each year that Agents has been renewed, it was announced in early May (with the exception of season 4, which was announced in March 2016).
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Friday, March 2, with twelve episodes running through to a planned season finale on May 18.
