Black Panther co-writer and director Ryan Coogler had his eyes on another Marvel character to include in his film - Eli Bradley, A.K.A. Patriot of the Young Avengers. However, the script went a different, more Wakanda-focused direction.

"Crazy enough, for comic book fans, we toyed with the character Patriot for a little bit," Coogler told CinemaBlend. "Early on we were interested to get our hands on him, Joe [Robert Cole] and I, but that ended up going away so we could focus on Wakanda a little more."

In comic books, Eli Bradley/Patriot is the grandson of Isaiah Bradley, a black soldier who was the subject of experiments designed to reproduce the Super Soldier process that created Captain America. He was a founding member of the Young Avengers. In recent years, a new character named Rashaun Ellis has taken up the mantle of the Patriot.

Black Panther is due out in theaters February 16.
