APRIL SHOWERS, SUPER POWERS1 of 12
Marvel's April 2018 solicitations bring the final month of Avengers' "No Surrender" and pave the way for multiple milestone issues, including Despicable Deadpool #299 and Captain America #700.
Along the way, Infinity Countdown brings Marvel's cosmic wing to the forefront with a new twist for the Infinity Stones, and several heroes jump back into action.
Get the details of all this and more right here, as we rundown everything we learned from Marvel's April solicitations.
DAMNED2 of 12
Marvel’s Damnation crossover will bring Mephisto to Earth and put Doctor Strange back in the role of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. But will that resurgence last, with the solicitation for Doctor Strange #389 saying his “first act back as Sorcerer Supreme backfired catastrophically”?
It looks like Damnation will have even wider implications than just Strange’s place in the Marvel Universe, however, with that same Doctor Strange #389 solicitation foretelling a “new magical landscape” in the crossover’s wake.
GOING, GOING, GONE3 of 12
After March saw the cancellation of multiple ongoing Marvel series, April seems to essentially steady the line, though a pair of titles have gone missing, and a couple holdovers from March remain M.I.A.
First off, Monsters Unleashed is missing after #12’s solicitation in March, which gave no indicator of a series finale. And Jessica Jones doesn’t have an issue solicited in April either – but that may owe to writer Brian Michael Bendis’ illness in December 2017, which the writer said had delayed his work on finishing some Marvel titles.
Captain Marvel is is missing for a second month come April, though writer Margaret Stohl re-assured fans today the series is merely on hiatus – possibly thanks to Carol’s involvement in Infinity Countdown, which will also put Guardians of the Galaxy on hiatus for its duration.
America, missing in March’s solicitations, is also absent from April’s. Marvel's last word on the title was that it's not cancelled, but that's two months in a row it won't hit stands.
And the big news – it looks like Despicable Deadpool #299 may be that series final issue (at least with the “Despicable” moniker) as the solicitation says it’s the “second-to-last skirmish in the saga of the Despicable Deadpool.”
PRISONER OF KINGPIN4 of 12
Following a milestone issue in March’s #600, Daredevil #601 puts Matt Murdock directly in Kingpin’s clutches as his prisoner.
Daredevil has been in worse places before, but with Wilson Fisk now the mayor of New York, the consequences of Matt’s capture may be more dire than ever.
BACK IN BLACK5 of 12
It hasn’t exactly been a secret that Black Widow – presumed dead as of the end Secret Empire - is possibly still alive. But the solicitation for Tales of Suspense #104, the revival’s penultimate issue, all but confirms Natasha’s still out there.
And then there’s Tony Stark, whose return has been hinted at for some time now, and is finally confirmed to happen in Invincible Iron Man #599.
X-MEN BABY BLUE6 of 12
X-Men Blue has been foreshadowing a new villainous team-up between Emma Frost, Bastion, and Miss Sinister for a while now, but in X-Men Blue #25, a new team of X-Men – apparently consisting of Daken, Bloodstorm, Jimmy Hudson, Polaris, Gazing Nightshade, and Xorn will rise to meet them while the original 5 X-Men are in space dealing with “Poison X.”
Then, in X-Men Blue #26, the villains’ plot is revealed – and will lead to a new wave of mutant births. But what’s bad about that, considering how endangered mutantkind has been lately? Hmm…
A NEW CHAMPION IS CROWNED7 of 12
The new Champions creative team of Jim Zub and Sean Izaakse was announced prior to the release of April’s solicitations, but the text for Champions #19, their debut issue, says that there will be another, previously untold addition to the team – an entirely new hero.
”Don’t miss this first chapter of a new era of Champions – and the birth of a brand new hero!” reads the solicitation. The issue also formally brings Nadia Pym and Riri Williams into the team, so it looks like big line-up changes are on the way for Marvel’s teen team.
AVENGERS: NO SURVIVORS?8 of 12
With Avengers' "No Surrender" hitting its final month in April, the twists look to be coming fast and furious in the last four issues of the weekly series.
First, the solicitation for Avengers #687 mentions a traitor among the Avengers – and with the cover depicting members of the team busting out of Voyager’s head, the implications for the “long lost” Avenger could be big.
Then, a week later in Avengers #688, another Avenger will apparently die. And given the wording of the threat – “one Avenger will sacrifice everything to give his teammates a fighting chance” – and a cover featuring Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, it’s looking like poor Quicksilver might follow in his MCU counterpart’s footsteps and shuffle loose this mortal coil.
COUNTDOWN TO INFINITY COUNTDOWN9 of 12
Marvel’s next big crossover (don’t call it an “event”!) Infinity Countdown continues in April, finally bringing in Adam Warlock in Infinity Countdown #2.
But the second issue of the cosmic series also introduces a new mystery – the “secret of the Power Stone.” The Power Stone was seen in Gamora’s hands on the cover of March’s Infinity Countdown Prime - and we already know Gamora has more than her share of secrets.
And, it looks like artist Mike Hawthorne, one of writer Gerry Duggan’s longtime Deadpool collaborators, will join Infinity Countdown with #2.
OLD WOMAN LAURA10 of 12
Old Man Logan has become a mainstay in the Marvel Universe since joining the core timeline after Secret Wars, so it’s not a surprise that Marvel would want to repeat its success with the idea with “Old Woman Laura,” a new storyline kicking off in All-New Wolverine #33, which visits a future version of Laura Kinney, the current Wolverine.
Laura has homage major Wolverine storylines before, such as with “Enemy of the State II,” but seeing a fully-formed Laura as the Best There Is At What She Does far in the future is a cool prospect.
MARVEL 2-IN-ONE + FOUR11 of 12
Marvel 2-In-One has already recaptured the spirit of the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Universe – but what about the team itself?
The return may come slightly unexpectedly (but not entirely out of left field) in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #30, where the team up of Johnny Storm, Ben Grimm, and Lunella Lafayette officially takes on a still-unrevealed fourth partner – and the name “Fantastic Four.” And who better to spearhead the return of Marvel’s first family than the current smartest person in the world?
On top of that, back in Marvel 2-In-One #5, it looks like another FF mainstay may be back in place, as the solicitation refers to “the ultimate threat” of two of the Fantastic Four’s “greatest foes” – and the menacing visage of Doctor Doom, back in his original villainous mask.
But that’s not all that’s on the cover of Marvel 2-In-One #5. There’s also a mysterious woman pictured alongside Ben and Johnny. Her identity is a total mystery – not even hinted at in the solicitation.
