Updated March 15, 2018: DeWanda Wise has dropped out of Captain Marvel due to scheduling conflicts with her just-renewed TV series She's Gotta Have It, according to Deadline.

In an interview with Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige, Indiewire reported that filming was set to begin this month.

Original Story: Actress DeWanda Wise has been cast in Captain Marvel opposite Brie Larson, according to Deadline.

Wise's reported role was not disclosed, but she seems a logical choice for Monica Rambeau, the first woman to use the name "Captain Marvel." A longtime Avenger, Rambeau has often worked with Carol Danvers. She last appeared in The Ultimates using the codename Spectrum. It is not known whether Rambeau will appear in the film.

Captain Marvel will also star Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury, and is said to take place in the 1990s, with a Skrull-based threat as the villain.

Captain Marvel is due out in theaters March 8, 2019.
