This week’s Marvel 2-In-One #1 from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Jim Cheung sets the stage for the Richards family’s return – and reveals some secrets along the way.
Spoilers ahead for Marvel 2-In-One #1.
As Marvel 2-In-One #1 opens, Johnny Storm barely survives a fiery racecar crash, while elsewhere, Ben Grimm presents an award named after the Richards family - but he party is interrupted by a fight between Spider-Man and Piledriver of the Wrecking Crew, which Ben quickly ends. After the dust settles, Spider-Man gives him the keys to a warehouse where everything that once resided in the recently-sold Baxter Building is held. He also tells Ben to visit Johnny, who is spiraling out of control after the loss of his family.
(Note: They never reveal who bought the Baxter Building from Parker Industries.)
Ben heads home, where he is confronted by Doom. After a brief altercation, Doom uses magic to restrain Ben, giving him a device he looted from the Baxter Building after Reed Richards’ apparent death. The device contains a message to Ben from Reed, which reinforces Ben’s belief that Reed, Sue, and the children are dead, but in which Reed also encourages Johnny and Ben to explore the multiverse using a device he has bequeathed to them.
Taking a Fantasticar from the hangar, Ben tracks Johnny down just as he is in freefall after his flame burns out while flying. Ben thinks Johnny is taking risks, but Johnny confesses he’s pushing himself because his powers are fading. Ben tells Johnny that he believes Reed, Sue, and the kids are alive, and he thinks they can be found in the multiverse - not realizing it may actually be true.
Meanwhile, Doom watches from afar, monitoring Johnny and Ben’s conversation in secret.
Marvel 2-In-One #2 is due out on shelves January 24.
