DOOMSDAY CLOCK Doubles Up & Dominates November Comic Book Sales

As expected, Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's DC Universe-Watchmen mash-up Doomsday Clock #1 was the best-selling comic book of November 2017, and was actually the two best-selling comic books of the month, according to figures released by Diamond Comic Distributors Friday morning.

Because Doomsday Clock #1's lenticular cover had a different cover price than the standard edition, Diamond counted it as two separate items, and the more expensive edition was the second best-selling comic book of November on its own.

That double dip, along with six various Batman titles including Dark Nights: Metal tie-ins helped DC dominate the Top 10 with eight total titles including first seven. Marvel accounted for the other two including the #8 title, Captain America #695.

Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli Darth Vader Volume 1: Imperial Machine was the best-selling graphic novel of November, one of four Marvel Star Wars collections to make the Top 10.

DC's top of the charts strength along with a high title count (Marvel and DC published 131 new titles each) helped split the Market Share charts for the first time in a while.

Marvel held onto the lead on the Dollar Share chart 34.29% to DC's 33.71%, but DC flipped the script leading the Unit Share chart 39.37% to Marvel's 34.52%.

Despite DC's big month, sales versus November 2016 (both five shipping weeks) were down 5.80% in dollars and 12.36% in units, and year-to-date with just one month left overall sales are down 9.72% versus 2016.

But as always, given the five-year growth curve the comic book Direct Market experienced up until this year, the numbers may look gloomier than they should. We asked John Jackson Miller of Comichron to give us his take away for the month:

"November was a $47 million month, the second best month of year in overall dollars, up from October. DC did very well, up 21% over its November performance last year. The rest of the market could not keep up, everything but DC off 15%. Image shared in that: no graphic novels in the Top 10 for the first time since January 2016.

"Significant: Before 2016, the last 5-week November was in 2011, the best month of the 'New 52' launch and was $41.28 million. We’re up 14% from that."
