Sony's Venom film will be based primarily on Venom's 90s anti-hero turn in the stories Venom: Lethal Protector and "Planet of the Symbiotes," according to director Ruben Fleischer.
Fleischer revealed the influences for his Tom Hardy-starring film at Comic Con Experience in Brazil (via Collider), though the director did not reveal any specifics of the story.
In Lethal Protector by writer David Michelinie and artist Mark Bagley, Venom and Spider-Man come to an easy alliance after Venom agrees to end his villainous ways. Relocating to San Francisco, Venom becomes an anti-hero.
In "Planet of the Symbiotes," a five-part story also written by Michelinie that spanned a series of one-shots tied to Spider-Man's various solo series at the time, Venom, Spider-Man, and Scarlet Spider team up to battle an invasion of symbiotes.
Little is known about the plot of Venom, however the film will not be connected to Tom Holland's Spider-Man, who appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Venom is due out in theaters October 5, 2018.
