The 8 Comic Book Films In Contention for VFX Oscar Award (And Who Was Left Out)

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has named the 20 movies shortlisted for the Visual Effects category in the 90th Annual Academy Awards. Eight of the films are based on comic books, ranging from Marvel Studios, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros./DC Films, as well as two foreign choices.

The films are: Alien - Covenant, Beauty & the Beast, Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk, Ghost in the Shell, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Justice League, Kong: Skull Island, Life, Logan, Ojka, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Shape of Water, Spider-Man - Homecoming, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Thor: Ragnarok, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, War for the Planet of the Apes, and Wonder Woman.

The only major North American comic book-based film from 2017 not included is Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

The Academy's Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee are expected to select 10 films to be officially nominated, with an announcement ceremony to take place January 23, 2018. 

The awards gala will take place March 4, 2018.
