This week, writer Donny Cates and artists Gabriel Hernandez Walta and Jordie Bellaire handed the title of Sorcerer Supreme to Loki in Doctor Strange #381, the debut of their run on the title. And while many of the details of how Loki came to the title are still a mystery, the issue does reveal the whereabouts of Stephen Strange, the former Sorcerer Supreme.
Spoilers ahead for Doctor Strange #381.
As revealed in an advance preview for Doctor Strange #381, Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme by winning a tournament according to Strange, after which he handed over the Eye of Agamotto and the Sanctum Sanctorum. The details of the tournament - including who ran it or who the other participants were - are not revealed.
In his first act as Sorcerer Supreme, Loki offers to pay the price for all magic used in his realm - though his contemporaries don't believe he has the power to do so. After a display of his power and a run in with Thor, Loki explains how he stitched together the Cloak of Levitation - and reveals that he knows Thor's true identity of Jane Foster.
Finally, it's revealed that after his "retirement," Stephen Strange has returned to practicing medicine as a veterinarian, using his remaining magic power to speak to animals.
Doctor Strange #382 goes on sale December 6.
