A new live-action Red Sonja film is in development at Millennium Films, reports Deadline. Millennium's Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta are working on fast-tracking the project and plan to hire a writer imminently.
“We have been waiting for the right time for this remake,” said Lerner.“And with the success of Wonder Woman, the audience has spoken. They want female heroes.”
Originally created by Roy Thomas for Marvel Comics, the Red Sonja rights later became independent and owned by a private LLC overseen by Luke Lieberman. Dynamite Entertainment has published Red Sonja comic books since 2005.
Although best known for the 1985 movie starring Brigitte Nielsen, Deadline said this new film will be "different, with fresh story ieas and characters."
