Fans of the MCU's cosmic wing may have a lot to look forward to in whatever comes after Avengers: Infinity War and Marvel Phase 3, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn says the sequel will "kickstart" Marvel's next overarching film arc.

Gunn made the claim while responding to questions from a fan about whether the MCU would end after Phase 3, stemming from a misreading of a quote from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige saying that Phase 3 and Avengers: Infinity War would close out the current story arc of the MCU - something Feige has said several times.

"No. Read Kevin Feige’s quotes & not the static around them. It’s the end of one long story & the beginning of another," Gunn explained on Twitter. "And one of the films that will kickstart the new story will be [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3]."

Gunn has made similar statements in the past, along with promising an impending appearance by Adam Warlock who was teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the promise that Sylvester Stallone's Starhawk and his Ravagers - a.k.a. the original comic book Guardians - would have an ongoing role in the MCU.

As for what constitutes the next stage of the MCU, most of the details are still unknown. Marvel's current film slate places the end of Phase 3 after the release of 2019's still-untitled Avengers 4. At this time, the only films confirmed to take place after Phase 3 are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which has not received an official release date - but which Gunn has hinted will land in 2020 - and a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel scheduled for July 5, 2019.
