NEW YEAR, OLD MARVEL1 of 12
Marvel "Legacy" rolls on in January 2018, and even though the initiative is all about bringing back the classics, there's plenty new to see in Marvel's January solicitations.
New members for the Champions, an Avenger in trouble, and an X-Men reunion are just the tip of the iceberg for this cold winter month, so read on to find out what we learned from Marvel's January 2018 solicitations.
PREPARE TO BE JUDGED2 of 12
"Judgement Day" has a loaded meaning, but for Marvel's Royals series it appears to be the end. There's no new Royals issue solicited for January 2018, but in its place is the previously-announced Inhumans: Judgement Day one-shot by series writer Al Ewing. Add to that the Royals Vol. 2 collection collects the second arc of the series - and that one-shot - and it could spell the end for the Inhumans title (at least in this incarnation).
And while some Marvel series end inconspicuously, the publisher has seemingly put an end-point to the just-announced-as-revived Tales of Suspense even though the first issue - #100 - isn't due out until December 2017. January's #101 is listed as "#101 (of 5)" which is a bit confusing, but seems to mean it's just a five-issue return, with #104 being its last. When it was announced, Marvel never explicitly said if it was an ongoing or a miniseries (despite Newsarama's request for clarification earlier), but this seems to answer that question.
And lastly, is it just us or does the "It all ends here" text in All-New Wolverine #30 also seem to imply the end of the series as well as the current story? Hey, with the original Wolverine back among the living and this current arc bringing back the blade that can specifically cut through Wolverines - adamantium or not - this could be a finale as well.
DJ STAR WARS3 of 12
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be out in theaters this December, and Marvel will follow that by exploring the backstory of one of the film’s new characters in Star Wars: The Last Jedi – DJ #1.
The one-shot will delve into the history of the man known only as “DJ,” played by Benicio Del Toro in the film.
SPIN CITY4 of 12
In “Legacy,” Matt Murdock’s arch-enemy Wilson Fisk will become the mayor. And with no wait to fight him the most powerful man in the city, will Matt Murdock join him?
The solicitation for Daredevil #597 says Murdock will join the Fisk administration – but knowing Daredevil’s opinion on Kingpin, there has to be more to this story (no to mention a milestone Daredevil #600 coming soon after.)
RE-GENERATION X5 of 12
Several original members are returning to Generation X in “Legacy” (including the evil M-Plate, a mash-up of Emplate and Monet St. Croix), and now it looks like one more will join the fray in #86.
Counting the members we’ve seen so far, it looks like Synch, Mondo, Skin, or the original Penance may be on the way back.
TO ME, MY X-MEN6 of 12
Professor X looks to be on his way back to the land of the living in Astonishing X-Men, but it’s in X-Men Blue #19 and 20 that he’ll reunite with his young mutant team.
Though the exact circumstances aren’t clear, the solicit mentions that the time-displaced original X-Men will meet Xavier again this January.
REALITY BITES7 of 12
It’s no secret that the Infinity Stones will play a big role in the future of the Marvel Universe, and now it seems we know where another one will next crop up.
According to the solicitation for Captain Marvel #128, Carol Danvers and Peter Quill will butt heads over the Reality Stone in January. The last time we saw the Reality Stone, it shattered during the events leading up to Secret Wars.
BIGGEST SPIDEY/DEADPOOL STORY EVER?8 of 12
Deadpool may be on the run from Spider-Man, but according to the solicitation for Spider-Man/Deadpool #26, it seems that they’re stuck together for the foreseeable future.
The solicit for the issue mentions “the biggest Spider-Man and Deadpool story of all time” coming in July 2018.
Hey, isn't there a new Deadpool movie coming out in June 2018? What a coincidence.
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE9 of 12
Both the Defenders and the Champions will apparently be adding some members in January.
The cover for Champions #16 shows the new Falcon, Wasp, Moon Girl, Patriot, Spider-Gwen, Ironheart, and Red Locust (in a new costume) apparently trying out for the team - while Viv Vision is conspicuously absent.
Then in Defenders #9, White Tiger, Echo, Spider-Woman, Elektra, Black Cat, Misty Knight, and Colleen Wing all seem to be up for membership on the street-level team.
AN AVENGER FALLS10 of 12
The solicitation for Avengers #679 (part of the weekly “No Surrender” story) says that in that issue “The first Avenger dies.”
That could either mean that the first Avenger in a series of Avengers will die in #679, or it could mean that the first person to be an Avenger might kick the bucket – and given the weird nature of the still-mysterious Voyager, that could almost be anybody.
One thing’s for sure, the Avengers may need to do some recruiting after this – either an Avenger or Champion is still going to die in December’s Champions #15.
AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T INVOLVE HYDRA...11 of 12
Writer Mark Waid and artist Chris Samnee will take Captain America back to basics in “Legacy,” pitting him against Kraven the Hunter.
But even with that approach, there seem to be some surprises in store as the solicitation for Captain America #697 mentions something big to take note of on the issue’s final page.
