The iconic British football comic Roy of the Rovers is returning in 2018 with a rebooted series from Rebellion, reports BBC. The original series, which ran from 1954 to 2001, was one of the most popular sports comics of the time with the title entering sports parlance as "real Roy of the Rovers stuff" when describing dramatic sports moments.
"There are only a handful of truly iconic characters in British comics, and Roy Race is surely one of them," said Ben Smith, Rebellion's head of books and publishing. "We look forward to bringing Roy to modern audiences in a completely fresh incarnation that honours the extraordinary legacy of the character."
Rebellion plans to publish a series of graphic novels coinciding with the 2018-2019 football season about Roy Race and his fellow Melchester Rovers players at the beginning of their careers.
Rebellion acquired Roy of the Rovers as part of its acquisition of Fleetway comics library in 2016.
