"Gears of War #1" first look

The video game series Gears of War is returning to comic books in 2018, and IDW Publishing have recruited Max Dunbar to illustrate it. Scheduled to launch January 31, 2018, Gears of War: The Rise of RAAM is a prequel to the games as it shows the origin of one of the franchise's top villains, General RAAM.

Dunbar comes to Gears of Wars following his work on the current Hasbro-verse crossover event First Strike. The artwork seen here is Dunbar's early artwork for the series, although not final.

"I've always been a huge fan of the character and environment design of the Gears of War franchise," Dunbar told Newsarama. "I know a ton of thought and work went into designing every aspect of this universe and it shows. I'm also a huge fan of how tough nearly every character is. Just badasses all round."

Dunbar says that the toughest part of the project is drawing the endless horde of Lambent, but "I'm having a blast."
