Russell Tovey has been cast as the Ray for the DC-CW verse, reports TVLine. Tovey is scheduled to debut in the four-way "Crisis on Earth-X" crossover between Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and also voice the character in the CW Seed animated series Freedom Fighter: The Ray.
"Raymond 'Ray' Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction," reads CW's description of the character. "But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a 'genetic light bomb.' The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice - he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself the Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists."
Ray Terrill (a.k.a. the Ray) debuted in 1992's The Ray #1 by Jack C. Harris and Joe Quesada, with the CW's rendition of the character based more closely on the character as he appeared in Grant Morrison's The Multiversity.
Tovey is best known for his starring roles in ABC's Quantico and BBC's Being Human.
Freedom Fighters: The Ray is scheduled to debut this fall on CW Seed.
"Crisis on Earth-X" is scheduled to run November 27 and 28 on Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
