Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is in talks to direct Warner Bros.'s long-simmering live-action Akira, according to Deadline. Based on the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, the film has been in development at WB since 2002 with directors ranging from Stephen Norrington to Ruairi Robinson, Allen and Albert Hughes, and Jaume Collet-Serr.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson are producing Akira through their Appian Way banner, along with Mad Chance's Lazar and Legendary Pictures.
Waititi's next project is scheduled to be the Fox Searchlight film Jojo Rabbit, which he also wrote. He also signed on for the films Bubbles and The Breaker Uppers. No commitment has been made public about more films with Marvel Studios.
