Cowboy Bebop co-creator Shinichiro Watanabe is writing and directing an Blade Runner animated short set between the events of the original film and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 sequel. Titled Blade Runner Black Out 2022, the short film takes place three years after the original film and concerns a large power outage on the western seaboard.

Watanabe is joined by character designer/animation director Shukou Murase and composer Flying Lotus.
Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is scheduled to be released in Japan on September 26 - no North American release date is known.
Two additional animated shorts are also in the works. Luke Scott is drecting 2036: Nexus Dawn and 2048: Nowhere to Run.
The live-action Blade Runner 2049 is scheduled to open in North American theaters October 6.
