Drew Goddard has been tapped to write/direct 20th Century Fox's X-Force film, according to Deadline. Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds will co-star and produce the film, alongside long-time X-Men producers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Josh Brolin is also expected to reprise his role as Cable.

X-Force is described by the Hollywood trade as "a Black Ops force of down and dirty mutant warriors who are far more ruthless than their X-Men counterparts."

20th Century Fox have been developing an X-Force movie since 2013, with two previous writer/directors - Jeff Wadlow and Joe Carnahan - previously hired for the project.

Goddard is best known as a writer of Cloverfield, Daredevil season one, and the film adaptation of The Martian. He directed Cabin in the Woods, and was hired to direct Sony's aborted Sinister Six spin-off film. Goddard consulted on the script for the untitled Deadpool sequel and was reportedly among the finalists to direct that film before David Leitch was ultimately chosen.

Goddard is scheduled to direct Bad Times at the El Royale for Fox this fall, then immediately segue into X-Force according to Deadline.

There are three X-Men related films scheduled for 2018 release (Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix), but the studio has reserved the 2019 dates of February 15, June 7, and November 22 for unspecified additional X-Men projects.
