John Cena and Joshua Sasse are the frontrunners to play Captain Marvel in New Line Cinema's Shazam!, according to The Hashtag Show. A purported casting notice for Billy Batson also infers that the DC hero will go under the name Captain Marvel as well.
"Male, 12-15 years old. A teenager who becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal," reads the reputed Shazam! casting notice. "Granted access to incredible powers by the wizard Shazam, he speaks the wizard’s name and is struck by a lightning bolt that gives him the powers of the gods."
The Hashtag Show goes on to say that a third unnamed actor was in contention for the role, but "has seemingly fallen out of favor."
Sasse is best known for playing the titular star of the ABC musical comedy Galavant, and recently appeared on the CW's No Tomorrow.
Cena came to fame as a wrestler for WWE, but like Black Adam actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (who is also co-producing Shazam!) Cena has starred and co-starred in various films. Cena is currently scheduled to co-star in Paramount's Transformers spin-off, Bumblebee.
In the past, Mark Millar has openly campaigned for John Cena to star in a film adaptation for his creator-owned, Captain Marvel-inspired title Superior.
Shazam! is anticipated to begin filming in early 2018.
