A film about the origin of the Joker is in development at Warner Bros. with The Hangover director Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese, according to Deadline. Phillips will reportedly direct and co-write (with Scott Silver), with Scorcese in as producer.
Intended to be "a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film," the movie would be set in the early 1980s and be closer in tone to Scorcese's Taxi Driver and Raging Bull than any DC films to date.
The film is said to be a part of a new banner at Warner Bros. that would "expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters." Assumedly, that would be outside the existing DCEU continuity.
The Hollywood trade reports that while Jared Leto will reprise his role as the Joker in the next Suicide Squad film, this Joker movie will feature "a different actor, possibly younger."
