The God of Lies will become a new contender for the title of Sorcerer Supreme when Loki and Doctor Strange clash in "Legacy." As announced at Comic-Con International: San Diego, starting with Doctor Strange #381, writer Donny Cates with artists Gabriel Hernandez Walta and Jordie Bellaire will pit the two masters of mysticism against each other in a conflict that Cates says "goes beyond good and evil."
"Stephen and Loki are so fun to match up against one another. One gets the impression that they dislike each other for reasons even beyond good and evil," Cates toldPreviewsWorld. "And yeah, there’s also the whole 'Loki is the new Sorcerer Supreme and is living in Stephen’s house and wearing his clothes' thing, too. So that's not helping anything. They’re both enigmatic and complicated, perhaps too alike to ever be on the same page. That’s the kind of volatility that I love to play with between the two."
"But really…I can’t say too much," he continued. "There are some rather enormous changes coming for both of them, and I do believe Marvel would like me to keep them close to the vest."
As for what those changes may be, Cates is mum. But there's at least one major secret ready to be revealed early in his run.
"The second issue of my run (Doctor Strange #382) has one of the craziest reveals in recent Marvel history," Cates teased. "It’s something I pitched when I first got to Marvel, and I was convinced as I pitched it that they would never in a million years let me get away with it."
Doctor Strange #381 is due out on shelves in November. Here's the full solicitation:
