Two days before Dark Nights: Metal #1 hits shelves, DC has pulled back the curtain and revealed a major returning character will act as a guide in the upcoming event.
Spoilers ahead for Dark Nights: Metal #1.
In an interview with The Washington Post, series writer Scott Snyder explains that that Sandman - Dream of the Endless - will appear in the first issue and play into "some very key moments that spin the story in its essential directions."
The Endless's Death appeared in 2010's Action Comics #894 with special permission from her co-creator Neil Gaiman, and like in that instance DC asked him for permission here for Dark Nights: Metal - and received it.
“I was so excited. It was one of the greatest days of my professional life,” Snyder told The Post. “[Neil] couldn’t have been more generous. I just want to say thank you to him for sharing such an incredibly special character with us. It’s literally one of the best moments of my career, to be able to get to write a character that meant so much to me growing up and still does.”
Although Dream returns in Dark Nights: Metal #1, Snyder said that the series remains a Justice League story.
"At the same time, this really is a Justice League story focused on their discovery of the Dark Multiverse and the invasion with these evil Batmen [now] here and the desperate attempt to stop that using Nth metal," said Snyder.
Dark Nights: Metal #1 will be available at 12:00am Eastern on Wednesday, August 16.
