John Cena has been cast in an unspecified lead role for Paramount Pictures' Bumblebee. The Transformers spin-off began filming this week in California, with Cena joining the previously-cast Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, Kenneth Choi, and others.
Bumblebee is set in the late 1980s with Herbie The Love Bug-esque plot.
"On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken," reads the studio's plot. "When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug."
Travis Knight is directing the spin-off, based on a script by Christina Hodson.
Originally scheduled for release June 8, 2018, Bumblebee has been pushed back to a December 21, 2018 release.
