Ruben Fleischer, the recently-tapped director of Sony Pictures' upcoming Venom film, has shared his perspective on the three characters at the center of the film. Confused? The movie will star Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, as well as the Klyntar symbiote - but their merging creates a new character.

“They become almost a third being, which is what Venom is,” Fleischer told Variety. “There’s a famous quote: ‘You’re Eddie Brock. I’m the symbiote. Together we are Venom.’”

Fleischer went on to explain why he signed up for Venom, and why it appealed to him.

“I’ve always been drawn to the more antihero superheroes,” said Fleischer.  “There’s a dark element to [Venom] and a wit that has always appealed to me.

Columbia Pictures' president Sanford Panitch, who is overseeing the film, is said to compare it to horror directors John Carpenter and David Cronenberg while being "more pop and fun."

Sony/Sanford also continues to be cagey as to whether or not Spider-Man will appear in a Venom film, although indirectly implies there are no plans for the first.

“If we get lucky enough to make more than one [Venom film] and continue the franchise, there are lots of opportunities,” Panitch told Variety.

Venom is scheduled to be released October 5, 2018.
