George A. Romero Passes Away at 77

George A. Romero passed away Sunday, July 16 after a battle with lung cancer, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Romero was best known as the writer/director of the zombie films Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and other films in the franchise. Born February 4, 1940 as George Andrew Romero, he is considered the creator of the modern zombie trope.

In addition to films, Romero wrote several comic books such as Toe Tags at DC Comics and Empire of the Dead at Marvel Comics.

Romero is survived by his wife and three children.
