Veteran stuntman John Bernecker has passed away as a result of injuries suffered during an accident while filming AMC's The Walking Dead, reports Variety. Bernecker died at the Atlanta Medical Center on Wednesday evening due to blunt force trama according to Coweta County Coroner Richard Hawk.
The fatal injury reportedly occured when Bernecker fell off a balcony, dropping over 20 feet to land on a concrete floor. The stuntman was immediately rushed a local medical facility, and The Walking Dead shut down production while AMC released a statement.
“We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for The Walking Dead and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set,” read AMC's statement. “He was immediately transported to an Atlanta hospital and we have temporarily shut down production. We are keeping John and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Bernecker had worked in the film industry as a stuntman since 2009, and in addition to The Walking Dead he had just completed work on Marvel Studios' Black Panther. In addition to stuntwork, he also appeared as an actor in several movies including Logan, Goosebumps, and True Detective.
