Along with the many tonal differences the showrunners of Star Trek: Discovery have told fans to prepare for, the show will also feature an added sense of danger - as in, crew members may die in the progress of their mission.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg compared the threat of death on Star Trek: Discovery to that of Game of Thrones - but also assured fans that Discovery wouldn't be "gratuitous" with killing off characters.

Game of Thrones changed television,” Berg explained. “They almost made it difficult to fall in love with people because you didn’t know if they were going to be taken away from you. That show’s had an influence on all TV dramas that have come after it.”

“Death isn’t treated gratuitously on this show. It’s not for shock value. But when it happens we want to make sure that people really feel it.”

Star Trek: Discovery premieres September 25 on CBS before moving to the CBS All Access app for the remainder of the first season.
