Joe Johnston is the third name added to a shortlist of replacement directors for Lucasfilm's Han Solo film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Johnston joins Ron Howard and Lawrence Kasdan as reputed candidates - and he has a unique pedigree not many could match.
In addition to directing both Captain America: The First Avenger and The Rocketeer, Johnston got his start working for George Lucas on the Star Wars films. He worked on A New Hope as an artist, as well as an extra - playing a Stormtrooper and an Imperial gunner. Moving forward, Johnston also designed Boba Fett - based on an unused sketch for Darth Vader by Ralph McQuarrie. Johnston later segued to directing, including doing an episode of Lucasfilm's The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles in 1993.
The untitled Han Solo film is scheduled for release May 25, 2018.
