Spoilers ahead for this week's Batman #24.
Batman is asking Catwoman to marry him in the final page of this week's Batman #24, as spoiled by DC Comics in an article with USA Today. The original solicitation for the issue teased Bruce Wayne "making a proposition to one of his enemies—one that will change everything for the Dark Knight and his allies!" and follows in line with revelations the character had in the recent "The Button" crossover in his meeting with his father, Thomas Wayne.
“I want people to go home and be like, ‘Should she marry him? Should she say yes?’ There’s a whole conversation that could come out of this," said series writer Tom King, who worked on the issue with artists David Finch and Clay Mann. Here is a longer preview of the scene from Batman #24.
According to USA Today, the diamond ring is said to be something that Batman has "secretly kept for decades." While meeting the Flashpoint version of his father Thomas Wayne, the DCU Batman is told to focus more on his own life and less on being a hero.
“Everyone’s done vengeance, everyone’s done ‘The night is so dark,’" said King. "Giving Batman more pain doesn’t reveal anything about his character because he’s taken as much pain as he can. But giving him love and joy, that combines with the tragedy of his past into something new and never done before.”
Although Batman has not had one stable paramour in his decades of existence, a Batman/Catwoman romance has been a regular occurence in various stories and continuities - and in some cases, leading to marriage.
“Catwoman is someone who’s seen his pain and has been through stuff as bad as he has been through,” said King. “She says, ‘Look, both of us are broken, but we can be broken together.’"
King questions the reasoning behind Wayne's decision, and says its something he'll be dealing with in future issues.
“Was this a moment of vulnerability or a moment of arrogance? That’s almost the cliffhanger,” said King. “Is Batman making the greatest decision of his life or the greatest mistake?”
As for Catwoman's role in all of this, King said that Selina Kyle will make her decision known soon - but only after another surprise by Bruce.
“It’s like, ‘You think you know me, but you don’t know me until this,’” King says. “The actual answer will come after he reveals something he’s never revealed to anyone, and she has to decide whether that’s good or bad.”
Coincidentally, this week is the 30th anniversary of the wedding of Marvel's Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Mary Jane Watson.
Batman #24 is on shelves this Wednesday, with Batman #25 due out June 21.
