Following the surprise cliffhanger in this week's Secret Empire #2, Marvel Comics has announced that the 2017 summer event is adding an extra issue to facilitate the ending.
“Nick [Spencer] has constructed each issue of Secret Empire so that it ends with a climactic twist or a big reveal or a shocking development, and issue #9 is no exception,” said Tom Brevoort, Marvel's Senior Vice President/Executive Editor. “So moving into the finale, with issue #10, the heroes across the Marvel Universe will be pushed to the breaking point as we race to the exhilarating climax we’ve been planning for months. Oh, and let me say again: we’re not going to use the Cosmic Cube to simply reverse everything away - the stakes matter, maybe more than they ever have before.”
This would be the third consecutive major Marvel event in which extra issues were added, following Secret Wars and Civil War II. Marvel reiterated that no change is being made to Spencer's planned story, and that this extra issue will allow "the cataclysmic story to wrap up as intended."
Note that in the cover to Secret Empire #10, the masthead central logo is obscured and "Classified." Marvel explained at C2E2 that the interaction of the Hydra symbol and Steve's shield would change on every cover to reflect the progress of the story.
The all-new Secret Empire #10 is scheduled for released in August, which would mean that the event will have three issues that month as Secret Empire #6 and #7 are solicited for July.
Secret Empire #1 artist Steve McNiven will come full circle, as he's scheduled to illustrated this all-new finale.
