RAGNAROK & ROLL1 of 12The first trailer for Thor: Ragnarokwas released this week, and to say that's it's, well, pretty metal would be an understatement.
But aside from the tone of the trailer - which balances humor, action, and fantasy - there are a lot of Marvel Easter eggs and hints at the larger MCU story on display.
Because we watch these things obsessively - professionally, we've dug deep into the Thor: Ragnarok trailer and found a bunch of hidden goodness.
HAIL TO THE KING2 of 12Jack Kirby was one of Thor’s creators, and his design work on the 60s comic books was definitive of what became Marvel’s cosmic wing.
Kirby’s fingerprints are all over the Thor: Ragnarok, from the melodramatic designs, to the bright color palette, to the very title.
Moreover, there are some setpieces seen in the trailer, like the one above, which take design elements directly from the pages of Kirby’s Thor stories.
LISTENS TO ZEPPELIN ONCE3 of 12Between the Led Zeppelin soundtrack, the jokiness, and the colorful palette, there’s a lot in this trailer that ties Thor: Ragnarok to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. And that’s not even mentioning the presence of the Grandmaster – the Collector’s comic book brother.
But that’s OK with us – a unified vision and aesthetic couldn’t hurt Marvel’s growing cosmic movie wing. And the previous film, Thor: The Dark World led directly to Guardians of the Galaxy by introducing the aforementioned Collector in its stinger scene.
Of course, Thor: Ragnarok also brings in a little bit of the distinctive neon aesthetic of many classic 80s fantasy films *cough* Flash Gordon *cough* - something also tangentially connected to GotG.
HELA STRONG4 of 12Just how powerful is Cate Blanchett’s Hela?
From the looks of things, she all but singlehandedly destroyed Asgard and even shattered Thor’s hammer, the mighty Mew Mew – sorry, Mjolnir.
But what does it take to get that level of power? We’ve got a theory…
Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi said that the film would lead directly to Avengers: Infinity War. So, we’re guessing the final Infinity Stone will show up in Ragnarok, possibly in Hela’s hands.
Then there’s the matter of Hela’s recent comic book connection to Thanos. Could the Asgardian goddess of death be the stand in for the Marvel personification of Death in Infinity War?
HELMETS!5 of 12One thing some fans have bemoaned since the first Thor movie is the lack of the Thunder God’s signature winged helmet in most of his screentime. And yeah, there’s something missing from Thor’s silhouette when he’s not wearing that thing.
But the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer makes a point of showcasing Thor’s signature helmet as part of his gladiatorial gear (even if it looks a bit like Slingers's Prodigy).
And what’s more, Loki’s horned helm is back with a new style – and Hela’s even got her Jack Kirby designed signature headpiece for at least part of the film.
THE NIGHTSWORD6 of 12Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is given a spotlight in this trailer, but a bit of her backstory is also revealed when she’s seen sporting a more classic look alongside other Valkyries flying in to attack Hela, who is wearing her iconic headdress and brandishing the Nightsword, her fell blade.
The Nightsword – and Hela’s relationship to Valkyrie – looks to be a central part of Thor: Rangarok’s story... more on that in a second.
SPOTTED: HEIMDALL7 of 12Speaking of the Nightsword, a very different looking Heimdall, possibly on the run after Hela’s siege of Asgard, is seen carrying the sword in his one brief scene in the trailer.
This suggests that there’s some link between Heimdall and Hela – and possibly with Valkyrie as well.
AGENT OF ASGARD8 of 12Loki gets a big moment in the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, showing off a new outfit that looks ripped from the pages of his time as Agent of Asgard, right down to his horned circlet.
And, wielding a pair of knives, Loki is seen in direct action – something he rarely does, but which suggests a connection to the time in comic books when he was a secret operative of Asgard.
GOD OF HUMOR9 of 12Marvel’s Thor franchise has always had a strong sense of humor (even when that hasn’t necessarily worked to its benefit), and Thor: Ragnarok is no different. However, there’s no denying that the sense of humor in this trailer is anchored by some spectacular action scenes.
And what’s more, director Taika Waititi is known for his comedy, having directed films such as What We Do in the Shadows, Eagle Vs. Shark, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople - movies that combine a sense of adventure with the director’s trademark comedic voice.
DEEP CUTS10 of 12As we’ve pointed out, it’s easy to spot Marvel Easter eggs in the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, but there are a couple it took even us a few times to spot.
First up, in the opening few seconds of the trailer, there appears to be a skeletal figure seated on a throne, wearing a horned helmet and bearing a spear.
Random dead Asgardian? Could be. But it also bears a striking resemblance to Bor, Thor’s grandfather who has occasionally been a villain in comic books.
Then there’s that club Thor is carrying in the arena. Are we crazy, or does it bear a striking resemblance to Hercules’ trademark mace?
SKURGE OF SIMONSON11 of 12Karl Urban’s Skurge, the Executioner, only gets a brief moment in this trailer, but he’s seen carrying a pair of assault rifles in a direct homage to a moment from Walt Simonson’s legendary Thor run, which was a definitive moment for the character.
Simonson is probably the person most responsible for the classic comic book mythology of Thor, after Jack Kirby. He’s also known for putting classic Asgardian characters in new roles – so his aesthetic fits perfectly with the story of Ragnarok.
And, of course, the more Simonson’s touch is on the movie, the more fans of the cult classic Simonson character Beta Ray Bill will hold their breath for a cameo.
Or at least a frog.
