The X-Force-ish title being teased over the course of the week has been revealed as a new volume of Astonishing X-Men. Inhumans vs. X-Men's Charles Soule will be writing the book, with unspecified artists - although Jim Cheung provided the teaser image. With this news comes the team's full line-up: Old Man Logan, Archangel, Mystique, Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Psylocke, and Fantomex.
“If you’re going to relaunch a book called Astonishing X-Men, it had better live up to the title,” said Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso, who edited the 2004 revival of the title with writer Joss Whedon and John Cassaday. “Charles and his soon-to-be-revealed collaborators are about to unveil a story that touches every corner of the X-Men mythology, and the first issue alone will have massive ramifications for the Children of the Atom. We can’t wait to tell you more about this book.”
Marvel describes the team line-up as "eclectic," but for many the easiest comparison is to the recent two volumes of Uncanny X-Force run, which included six of the seven mutants listed for Astonishing X-Men.
The first adversary for Astonishing X-Men is described by the publisher as "a familiar menace ... reborn, renewed and resurrected." It goes on to frame the villain as one of the X-Men's "great foes." Somewhat coincidently, this comes just one day after the reformed X-Men villain Emma Frost seemed to fall back into her villainous ways in Inhumans vs. X-Men #6.
“Other than the occasional line here and there, I haven’t written most of the characters in the Astonishing X-Men lineup before – for me, that’s a fantastic challenge,” said Soule, who previously wrote Death of Wolverine, Death of X, and Inhumans vs. X-Men. “It’s been fun to get into their heads and think about what they all might have going on at this point in their lives. That said, the series is designed as a fresh starting point, so anyone jumping in with [Astonishing X-Men #1] will get everything they need there to follow the story - even if it’s your first X-story."
Astonishing X-Men was originally advertised to begin in June, but it is now scheduled to debut in July according to Marvel.
