iZombie's Rahul Kohli has been cast as Jack Spheer (a.k.a. BioMax) for an upcoming episode of the CW's Supergirl, reports Entertainment Weekly. Similiar to the character's comic book roots, Spheer is described as "a charismatic tech genius who has spent decades working on a medical innovation that will eradicate major illnesses and change the face of the world - if it works." EW adds that Spheer will be portrayed as an ex-boyfriend of Katie McGrath's Lena Luthor.
“I’m so excited to be working on Supergirl starring as Jack Spheer,” Kohli says. “It’s given me the chance to continue my relationship with The CW as well as fulfill my goal of meeting a Kryptonian.”
Originally created by Kurt Busiek and Tom Grummett for 2002's short-lived Power Company title, Spheer's invention ultimately mutated him into a metahuman with the power to control all living tissue - meaning people, animals, and even plants. Spheer took on the name BioMax.
Kohli is scheduled to debut in the as-yet-unscheduled episode 18 of Supergirl's third season, titled "Ace Reporter" - one that will highlight Melissa Benoist's character's journalism side.
“That’s actually been very important to us, especially in the times we now find ourselves living in; we’re one of the few shows on television that actually has a journalist as a lead character,” said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “We really get a chance to talk about the importance of journalism, and the importance of journalism ethics, and how important [it is to have] the objective truth be out there now.”
