New Line has named a female director for their planned adaptation of the Vertigo comic book The Kitchen, which was also decidedly female-driven.
Andrea Berloff, who was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing Straight Outta Compton, is slated to make her directorial debut on the film. The Kitchen, which launched in late 2014 from writer Ollie Masters and artist Ming Doyle, told the story of three women in 1970's New York City who take over the family crime business in Hell's Kitchen after their husbands go to jail. The conflict between the mob and the story's three female leads echoes the conflict caused by the "women's lib" movement of the era.
Berloff won the director's job by impressing producers with her screenply for the film, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
