Six more actors have joined Freeform's live-action Cloak & Dagger television series starring Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt. From Marvel's descriptions, each of the characters are either dramatic reinventions of previous characters or wholly-new roles created for the show.
Cloak's parents of Michael and Adina Johnson will be played by Miles Mussenden (Bloodline) and Gloria Reuben (ER). These characters are changed from Cloak's comic book parents of Otis Johnson and an unnamed Mrs. Johnson, with the mother described as investing "every aspect of her being into giving her son the life she believes he deserves. But she props up and protects Tyrone so much she almost forgets to love him." Mussenden's Michael Johnson is framed as "a working class father" who "trudges through his desk job to keep his family safe and happy."
Rescue Me actor Andrea Roth has been cast as Melissa Bowen, the mother of Dagger (a.k.a. Tandy Bowen). Unlike her comic book counterpart, Roth's character will be more motherly, with Marvel describing her as "the eternal optimist despite the struggles to adapt to her new existence. While complex and emotionally composed, her love for her daughter burns bright."
Grey's Anatomy's Carl Lundstedt will play "a salt-of-the-earth townie" named Liam who is dating Dagger when the show begins.
James Siato will play a mentor of sorts to Joseph's Ty Johnson, named Dr. Bernard Sanjo.
True Detective's J.D. Evermore rounds out this group of casting, planning a Detective Conners - a "contradiction of a man" that is overcompensating for a secret he has. There is no notable Marvel Comics' character going by the name 'Detective Conners,' however a NYPD Detective Connor Trevane was introduced in Howard Mackie's Spider-Man run.
“It’s been important to us from day one that Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is about character and emotion above all," said Cloak & Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski. "We’re so excited to have assembled a murderers’ row of talented actors who can execute on that, and then some.”
Freeform has ordered Cloak & Dagger straight to series, but no debut date has been revealed for the project.
