A new actor has stepped into the role of the sardonic but loveable droid R2-D2 for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the next installment of the main saga and the direct sequel to 2015's The Force Awakens. Actor Jimmy Vee will take on the role left vacant after the passing of Kenny Baker late last year, who played R2-D2 in numerous Star Wars films, starting with A New Hope and ending with The Force Awakens.
Vee isn't entirely new to the role, however - he worked alongside Baker on The Force Awakens as an uncredited assistant.
"It's been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside the legendary Kenny Baker," Vee said in a statement released by Oh So Small production agency. "Kenny was a fantastic actor and taught me all the 'tricks' on how he brought R2-D2 to life which I will continue to portray in his honour. I'm so excited to be a part of the Star Wars universe and can't wait for everyone to see what we've been working so hard on for the last year."
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is scheduled for release December 15.
