As Newsarama anticipated, Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix's major announcements were one and the same. But rather than relating to Kingdom Hearts III as Newsarama predicted, Marvel and Square Enix have announced a partnership to produce multiple games based on Marvel's characters. The first product of this partnership is an as-yet-untitled game that has been dubbed "The Avengers project", developed by Square Enix in conjunction with Deus Ex game developer Eidos Montreal and Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics.
Not much is known about "The Avengers project," but a brief trailer for the game shows Bruce Banner's glasses, Captain America's shield, Thor's hammer, and Iron Man's armor being retrieved from wreckage, with a female voiceover that suggests the Avengers have been inactive for some time in the world of the game, saying that "we just need to reassemble." The use of the "we" by the female voiceover infers membership in the team - the most obvious candidate would be the cinematic founding Avenger Black Widow, but Captain Marvel is also possible given her prominence in the Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite announcement trailer and her own forthcoming movie.
The imagery in this announcement trailer harkens back to Tony Stark's post-apocalyptic vison in the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron.

"The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise," reads Marvel's description. "Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come."
Marvel goes on to say that "more details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018."
A 2018 release would coincide with the planned release of the movie Avengers: Infinity War, which is scheduled for May 4, 2018.
