Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is an idea man, and his latest concept is a movie based on Moon Knight, Marvel's sartorially-inclined night-time vigilante with multiple personalities. Gunn tweeted about the idea after a fan asked him if he'd put Moon Knight in a Guardians sequel, saying that, while Moon Knight doesn't belong among the Guardians, he does have an idea for a film based on the character.
Oh my God I love Moon Knight & I have a great idea for a movie, I just wish I had the time (but, no, he doesn't belong in Guardians). https://t.co/ARJCPh62gt— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) January 4, 2017
Gunn quickly followed that up by saying he's too busy to direct a Moon Knight movie himself, but that he had pitched the concept to Marvel in the hopes of seeing it come to fruition.
@MCU__news I told them. But, like I said, I just don't have the time.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) January 4, 2017
But just because Gunn couldn't direct a Moon Knight movie, that doesn't mean he might not be invovled if such a project were to come together. While working on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn also wrote and produced a horror movie entitled The Belko Experiment.
If a Moon Knight film were to enter development, it wouldn't be the first time Marvel had considered adapting the hero to another medium. Just a few years ago, a Moon Knight television series was in development, though it never came to fruition. The Warren Ellis/Declan Shalvey itteration of Moon Knight recently appeared in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.
Likewise, Gunn has pitched other ideas to Marvel, including a Thunderbolts film, which he reportedly backed away from after the success of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Gunn's next Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is due out in theaters May 5.
